Is it
just me or are the Christmas releases half-a-year before the holiday a bit
much? Ever since the copyright
temporarily expired on It’s A Wonderful
Life in the 1980s, the holiday has been more commercialized, exploited and
trivialized than ever. Though it is not Santa Vs. The Martians, Tom & Jerry – A Nutcracker Tale is
really just another silly romp where the duo and related character hit each
other in the head (49 minutes here, with the idea that this is an “original
movie” as the DVD case falsely proclaims suspect) in a way that has nothing to
do with any holiday.
You will
feel like you have been mugged if you are expecting anything fun or interesting. Though not a recycling of any of the
classics, it lacks their energy and the characters are as trite as they are
undeveloped. All in all, it feels
slapped together and you’ll feel slapped if you buy it. Ultimately, it is a deluxe lump of coal. Yawn!
The 1.33
X 1 image is not bad, colorful, clean, but has some detail issues. Otherwise, it is not bad. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is not that great,
but it is a clean, clear, new recording.
Extras include DVD-ROM games Tom
& Jerry’s Holiday Story Factory, Journey
To The Toymaker and trailers for other Warner animated DVD releases.
