Shattered City – The Halifax Explosion (2007/Genius/RHI)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Telefilm: C

Shattered City (2007) is an initially ambitious TV mini-series that tries to cover the events of a terrible cargo ship collision that caused an insane explosion, one of the biggest of the early 20th Century, the 181 minutes begins with promise and becomes slowly muddled into a bore that it should not be.  Even supporting work by Graham Greene and Pete Postlewaite cannot save Bruce Pittman’s mishelming of this eventual bore.  See at your own risk.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is shockingly weak and soft, with detail issues and laughable digital effects.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix barely has any surrounds and shows how poor the TV audio was.  There are no extras.
