Bondi Tsunami (2007/MVD)

At 90
minutes, Bondi Tsunami really pushes
its luck telling (sort of) its story four Japanese teens going to Australia to
surf. At first, it is interesting and
abstract in showing the road trip and the life, but after showing some good
surfing, does not know where to go or how to innovate. Director Rachel Lucas scripted this, but
there is improv, though just hoping something interesting would happen and
“winging it” was not a good idea. They
are trying to sell this as a cult item, but it feels forced. See it at your own risk.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image has some haziness and is pieced together
in editing and multiple image montage that looks like something from an early
1980s Music Video. With that said, color
is consistent enough, though sometimes manipulated. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is adequate for
this production, but is nothing spectacular and music use is mixed. Extras include Australian Tour Highlights,
making of featurette, deleted scenes, Music Video channel, trailer and
director’s commentary.
