In yet
another attempt to launch another X-Files
type hit, Kim Manners from that hit show teams up with McG and the result is
the semi-hit series Supernatural,
now on DVD in this Second Season
set. Like the horrid revival of Night Stalker, the show is more
interested in being hip and pseudo serious than being scary or smart. In this laughfest, two brothers hunt for the
demon who killed their mother and become monster hunters overall on a road trip
to kill such human threats. Too bad this
hunt never turns up a good script.
As I
suffered through the pointless and even shallow a long, hour-long 15 episodes
over 6 DVDs, I was amazed that this could even qualify as Horror. Sure, it looks like it sometimes and the bad
make-up and effects tell us that, but if this were any worse, I would have
dubbed it Supernatural – Full Throttle. For what it is, it is very, very light,
passable fluff, but don’t expect much Horror to it. Even the teeny-bopper crowd it is aimed at
might find that a stretch.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is not great, but not bad. However, it leans towards too much bad
digital work, detail issues and no match for the likes of Smallville. For a Horror
genre work, the lighting and set-up are far from the best in the genre, evoking
more soap opera than suspense. The Dolby
Digital 5.1 mix is better, with somewhat active surrounds throughout, but
nothing special. Extras include unaired
scenes, gag reel, webisode gallery, 3 episodes with audio commentary, Jared
Padalecki’s screen test and two featurettes.
In the end, this is for diehard fans only.
