Scrubs – The Complete Fifth Season (DVD-Video)
Picture:
B- Sound: B- Extras: B- Episodes: B+
This
reviewer has said it before but Scrubs may
be the best series on television today and even in recent years. Zack Braff along with the rest of the cast
returns with their Fifth Season on Scrubs. Scrubs is a creative and imaginative series focusing on the daily
lives of a crew of somewhat off-center doctors.
NBC is STILL messing with the
series timeslot and weekly run, but has managed to survive long enough to get
their due with their 7th and Final Season (check local
listings). For a series that has evolved
into a top notch comedy from its original light drama with elements of comedy
premise, Scrubs captures the hearts
and minds of everyone who views it. Season Five of Scrubs is near the pinnacle of the series that has only improved
from season too season. The casts’
chemistry remains, the story arches soul remains, and creativity reigns
supreme.
In the Fifth Season, the doctors are a little older,
a little wiser, and even more insane.
From JD’s (Zach Braff) daydreams too the chaos that ensues around him in
reality there is never a dull moment. We
as an audience sit back and go for the ride as the stars grow up a little each
season. With marriages, love triangles,
and baby making there is a little something for everybody this season. It is nice to watch a series evolve in a
manner that only heightens the original creative mystique. No Great Kazoo or cousin Olivers here!
This
reviewer wishes he could suit up and live in this Medical fantasy, but for now
I will just have to pop in the DVD, sing the theme song [I sing every time],
and hope the seventh season is as good as all the rest.
The
technical aspects of this 3 disc, 24 episode set are quite good. The
picture again is presented in 1.33:1 full screen that continues to at times
have an uneven and blurry quality, but in the end is better than any previous
season. Looking at the picture quality further, Scrubs was the last NBC series to switch into the HD format, and
with the start of season 5 fans of the series finally get to view the
groundbreaking series kicked up a notch, though something is missing from the
film approach. The sound is quite
excellent being presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, which often
heightens the experience of the show with its great use of groundbreaking
music.
Into the Fifth Season the music remains a strong
component of the series and this reviewer still finds it was an excellent
choice for the series to be presented in this surround sound format. The
extras on this set are entertaining to say the least. Some extras include
an Extended Cut of the 100th Episode (one of this reviewer’s favorites), audio
commentaries, deleted scenes, and another excellently sentimental featurette
that looks back at the past five seasons of the series. Overall, a great set to own.
The
series remains a strong contender for this reviewer’s favorite as well and most
rewatchable series of all time. As previously stated Scrubs is one of the
best series on television today, with its wonderful cast and interesting
concepts of reality. Many words can describe this series; emotional, fun,
witty, ambitious, inventive, but on the whole amazing. This reviewer
highly recommends this DVD set for all audiences, with humor and entertainment
that can be watched again and again. Now that the last season of this
wonderful series is about to air in the fall, now is the time to join the staff
for one last scrub in!
