Remember The Titans – Director’s Cut (Blu-ray)
Picture: A-
Sound: B+ Extras: C+ Film: C+
To boost the Blu-ray format, Disney is releasing the
moderate Denzel Washington hit Remember The Titans (2000) and neither
the film nor its latest DVD-Video release was very impressive, as you can see
at this link:

So does the High Definition picture deliver? To my shock, yes. While the DVD offers faded Video Black, depth
limits and questionable detail, the 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition
image is much improved over the DVD-Video versions, making the latest one
definitely look like a recycle. I still
do not find the Super 35mm shoot by Philippe Rousselot, A.F.C., that memorable,
but I found it much more vivid here. The
Dolby Digital 5.1 from the previous DVDs are as weak here on this disc as
before, but the PCM 24/48 5.1 mix is much better, with much cleaner and clearer
dialogue recording and surrounds, especially (again) when the film gets
physical. Trevor Rabin’s score is not
bad either and comes across better with the higher fidelity. Extras are the same as the newest DVD set as
covered above, so why the improvement?
Apparently, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is so serious about
High Definition and Blu-ray that he is making certain the discs really
deliver. I just wish more producers were
as proud and aggressive about their product.
Even if you don’t like Titans, you can see the money that went
into it much more obviously.
