Eagle Eye
is issuing concerts of the late, great Rory Gallagher in bulk on DVD. First, they issued a terrific set of
performances he played over the years at Montreux, which you can read more
about at this link:

Now, we
get the 3-DVD set Rory Gallagher – Live
At Rockpalast: 5 Concerts 1976 – 1990 and the seven concerts included are
as rich, comprehensive, non- repetitive, energetic, remarkable set of
recordings that luckily survive all these years after his passing. The concerts are:
WDR
Studio L. Cologne, 1976
Grugahalle,
Essen, 1977
Loreley,
1982
Jam
Session Wiesbaden, 1979
Jam
Session, Loreley, 1982
Maifestspiele,
Wiesbaden, 1979
Live
Music Hall, Cologne, 1990
Needless
to say this is a man who could play guitar.
While the last set was 4.5 hours, this is 9 hours! That is good because if this man is not a
guitarist’s guitarist, than the instrument means nothing. I have said everything else I could say in
the last review, but will add that even the two sets do no overlap and all
should be seen at least once.
The 1.33
X 1 image can vary slightly throughout, but the analog PAL video is colorful and
though it can be fuzzy in parts, but look good for tapings of their age. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 mixes are
as good as they can be considering the age and recording circumstances of these
programs. Just expect clarity and
soundfield limits. Extras include an
interview with Gallagher on the show on DVD 1 and a booklet inside the foldout. Eagle’s done a high class job once again.
