Ergo Proxy – Volume Four, Wrong Way Home (Geneon/Animé TV)

B Sound: B Extras: D Episodes: B
The
future Earth is in ruins, people survive in automated citied 'Domes', seemingly
paradise... Everyone, everything is
perfect, no one questions anything... accept for mysterious creatures called
'Proxies' that walk the night. What are
they? What is the truth? What has happened to turn everything outside
the dome into a barren wasteland? Join
Re-l, Vincent and Pino on their search for the truth. Vincent haunted from his past and his
fragmented memory seeks to discover what exactly happened to him in the past is
somehow related to the mysterious but powerful 'Ergo Proxy'. Re-l unwilling joins Vincent not as a
companion but to discover what IS Ergo Proxy. Together with Pino they journey from various
places, citied domes, and discover and meet other people and other 'Proxies'
with each encounter unraveling what a bit of the truth.
This is
an original and unique Animé, featuring a mix blend of sci-fi and action drama.
It has a dark feel to the story and
leaves things in the shadows for viewers to think and develop their own
opinions, knowing something awful has happened. The characters themselves do not know anything
beyond outside their domes, yet are to confront the cold and harsh realities. Their ever sense of peace, was only in the
protected domes. Like their journey they
are forced to think, face about their actions and to realize and regain the
common sense they have lost.
This is
an amazing anime with much symbolism placed into the design and a lot thought
into creating each character. From
beginning to end, each character has their own purpose and reason for being
there. It is in a world where mankind
has almost become godlike through science and to be able to survive in a ruined
Earth, it is ironic that they are lost at the same time. Each proxy is a representation of the human
aspect, desire, illusion, lust, power, etc.... Reality itself is placed into question, and
what is seemingly the truth is not what it seems.

The anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 X 1 image looks very good, even with the stylized approach of the
animation. The sound mixes are
well-recorded, including Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo mixes, but the DTS 5.1 is the
one to go with and is still too rare for Animé on DVD as far as we are
concerned. Extras are zilch, unless
trailers suffice, but the performance of the disc is not bad.
If the
set-up sounds more than a little bit like the novels, feature film, TV series
and soon to be remake Logan’s Run,
you are correct. We look forward to the
film on HD-DVD and Blu-ray soon and TV series on DVD period, but have covered
the terrific limited edition soundtracks from Film Score Monthly on both. You can find those links as follows:
