Unlike
the happy children’s films about talking dogs, Jerome Boivin’s Baxter (1989) is a French film about
the killer terrier of the title who narrates the film throughout as he finds
himself unhappy with his life, people and is considering strategies including
killing to improve it. And that the
young boy he is with has a morbid fascination with Hitler only makes things
worse. However, the film never takes
advantage of anything creepy, sick, outrageous and/or potentially suspenseful
and becomes a pretentious dud. This one
is best skipped.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image originated on film and is a flat
presentation. Color can be limited and
depth a problem, making this barely watchable. The Dolby Digital French 2.0 Mono sounds good
for its age, though it could be a bit better.
