Perhaps
it is an acquired taste, but I just do not find the comedy troop Little Britain
that funny. It takes more than guys
dressing as women to be funny, something Kids
In The Hall also offered, and I was not the biggest fan of that show
either. Along with three TV series, we
now have Little Britain Live on DVD
from BBC Home Video and though it is ambitious and amusing, I never laughed.
This was
a tour of their comedy and this one was taped in May 2006 as they are rejoined
by Anthony Stewart Head (co-star of the hit U.K. series Manchild, but still best known in the U.S. for a series of Taster’s
Choice TV ads that was also being made as a series of Nescafe ads in the U.K.)
for this 78 minutes of their brand of comedy.
The only
thing I can say is that if you want to sample the troop in action, this is
likely the place to start versus taking on an entire series and BBC has done
this release right with extras.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is a little soft and the shooting
circumstances (dark theater) probably did not help in parts, but the
presentation is fine for comedy otherwise.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple and clear enough for the dialogue
and jokes. Extras include a high quality
color booklet on the concert inside the DVD case, with the DVD itself offering Little Britain’s Big Swim with deleted
scenes, exclusive Blackpool sketch,
deleted scenes from the main program, making the DVD, making of the concert and
commentaries by Matt Lucas and David Williams.
