The Mad Unrated

I like Billy Zane, but between smart comments
from Todd Newton, not enough benefits post-Titanic
and no Phantom sequel despite it
potential, he has hung in there trying to take his career in new
directions. The Mad Unrated (2006) has him playing a father and that is made
as a subplot more developed than usual, but this is still a zombie slasher film
with the twist that local organic meat is contaminated.
This was
also more or less what just happened in the ultra-silly Poultrygeist Night Of The Chicken Dead, but is no more effective
or reliable a production than such played-out films could offer. Co-writer/director Johnny Kalangis cannot
bring anything new to the material and does not know how to get the most out of
Zane, so this should only be left for the ultras curious, zombie fanatics or
Zanes biggest fans.
The 1.78
X 1 image looks HD shot with all the flaws and limits you could expect. This means soft and once again, another lame
lack of color scheme that makes this less watchable and rewatchable. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is a problematic
upgrade with the mix showing the limits of the low budget audio. Extras include a forgettable deleted scene
and obligatory making of featurette.
