Creepshow 3 (HBO Video/DVD)

It has
been twenty years since Creepshow 2 and
obviously even longer than the original anthology film involving a strange
collaboration between George Romero and Stephen King that celebrated EC Comics
and cohered in odd ways. Some accused
the film of being reactionary schlock, but it was a hit and people still talk
about it. However, few anthology
features of any kind get made anymore (Grindhouse does not count) and
the new Creepshow 3 is a total mess.
Involving
none of the name talents from before and even changing from a comic book look
to a digital graphics one (yaaa hooo?), we get goofiness of a young lady who
keeps seeing the ethnicity of her family switch from a remote control in Alice,
another bad electronics possessed tale in The Radio, a pathetic attempt to
cross the serial killer cycle with vampires in Call Girl, another lame mad
scientist tale with The Professor's Wife and a supernatural fourth dimension (or
whatever one they arte counting up to these days) in Haunted Dog.
None are
ambitious, suspenseful, original, interesting or intelligent. Instead, they are posers hiding behind the
title of a project that should have happened a long time ago and with persons who
actually cared about the Horror genre.
Directors Ana Clavell and James Dudelson did not have to imitate the
first films, though they do in some lame ways, but where is the ambition? Skip this package deal, or it will put you to
sleep.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is soft and likely shot in HD. Colors, details and depth are limited, while
none of the shots are memorable. You
know you are in trouble when the credits are the most visually interesting
aspect of the flick. The Dolby Digital
2.0 Stereo has no surrounds and is somewhat loud, but nothing special. Extras include interviews that are surreal in
that the makers act like they know what they are doing. For more on the previous films, both are on
DVD and you can read our coverage of Creepshow 2 at:
