After
many a comedy concert and even hit albums, we expected the Jeff Foxworthy show Foxworthy’s Big Night Out to be more of
the same, but it is essentially an attempt to do a new kind of Hee Haw with stand-up, skits and maybe
even music. Though not a huge hit, he
was able to convince Kenny Rogers, Hank Williams Jr., Trace Atkins, Joe Nichols
and other prominent names to show up on his show. The result is a little better than expected.
Part of
the reason is that TV like this can still work, though networks are too busy
with formula dramas, “reality TV” and degrading TV situation comedies to even
try and make anything enduring.
Foxworthy and CMT saw this as an opportunity and Foxworthy did not have
to sell out his style one bit, but the show never exceeds it parameters and
takes off like it could despite its ambitions.
The 1.33
X 1 image is shot in professional analog NTSC video, one of the last such shows
of its kind and looks fairly good, but as you watch, you can see why HD is a
good thing. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo
is simple and sufficient for this kind of show.
Extras a behind the scenes featurette, a Best of Jeff’s Monologues
section and bloopers reel.
