The Last Detective – Series 3 (British TV)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Episodes: C

So The Last Detective continued on, but Rockford Files it never was and this send-up of British police procedurals that never was funny.  The first two seasons did not do much for anyone here and Series 3 is actually flatter than the initial shows because the makers think this is funny even when you don’t.

Peter Davidson is back and though he is in a good mood (he is getting paid), one wonders why.  One would think maybe the show would try to do more as it went on, but the four telefilm installments never work out.  They are:

Friends Reunite

Towpaths Of Glory

Three Steps To Hendon

Willesden Confidential

Hendon is the best show by default, about an old Pop music star and his bad, but even it never really works out.  It is the best show in the series for that matter, but unless you find yourself enjoying this acquired taste, forget it.  Start with the first set if you must.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image has some detail issues, but is color consistent and has its share of depth.  We did expect the picture to get better with each release, but that has not happened either.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has Pro Logic surrounds to match, but they are still nothing special.  Extras are stills and text cast filmographies and bio/bibliography information on author Thomas.  This is supposedly the conclusion, but we’ll see.  We just can’t see where else they could go.
