Sad to
say, but the time has come for the Final
and Seventh Season of the Golden Girls.
Bye Dorothy! Bye Blanche! Bye Sophia! Bye Betty White…I mean Rose! The seven years that The Golden Girls were on the air were filled with great writing and
solid humor, each cast member being crucial to the series chemistry. Though they may be in their golden years the
girls always proved to have a huge element of spunk and panache. The show did display some wear in the Fifth and Sixth Seasons, but the girls pulled out all the stops for this
final curtain call.
Blanche
gets accused of murder, Dorothy goes on Jeopardy, Sophia turns out to have been
married twice, and Rose turns out to be a bit of a hussy. And you thought the girls of Sex and the City were bad! In the end Dorothy gets married to Lucas and
a dramatic, tearful end comes to this chapter in these friends’ lives, leaving
the audience happy they were allowed a glimpse into this foursome’s lives.
Also this
season we see the appearance of many classic guest stars, including such greats
as Merv Griffin and Leslie Nielson (Lucas).
The Golden Girls was always a
good series for having cameos of the classic old timers.
The
technical aspects of this DVD set are just as good as previous seasons. The picture is presented in its same 1.33 X 1
format with a good, balanced color and the quality even seems to be a tad
crisper than previous seasons. The sound
once again is in a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo that is adequate for the series,
but could be better seeing as how the surrounds are just bad. The extras are sparse for this season as they
have been in the past but at least a nice tribute is offered with the
featurette ‘A Look Back at The Golden Girls,’ which truly
shows the ins and outs of the fantastic series for all fans to enjoy.
In the
end, any big fan should pick this last season up, especially with the ‘Look
Back’ segment included. Bye Girls!
Golden Palace was a spinoff continuation that
followed. We’ll see when that hits DVD.
