Dan
Neira’s Spin (2006) is an ambitious,
interesting, somewhat awkward and different drama about two young women who
intend to break into the music business.
Dolores (Catalina Rodriguez) has the singing talent and Inez (Elika
Crespo) has the knack for the business.
They grew up together and have stayed tight to the point that they are
ready to take on the business.
It may
not work out as they expect, but they have a one-track mind about cutting
multi-track masters and becoming rich.
It is still a man’s world and a cutthroat business, but that’s not going
to give them any doubts.
At times,
it seemed this might be a musical and those moments almost seem like Bollywood
until the narrative kicks in from the Aline Robichaud/Liz Valenzuela
script. It is interesting and takes us
to a few places we have not been before, but it still cannot help but be
another tale about how the music business is rarely kind. The leading ladies can be very appealing and
it is nice to see something different versus the soundtrack-driven non-musical
we have been tormented with since the 1980s.
Spin is worth giving a spin
to.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot digitally and looks a little
softer than expected, but is still color consistent and has some form from
cinematographer Curtis Peterson. The
Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has no real surrounds, playing back at its best when
the music kicks in. Extras include a
Music Video, trailer and making of featurette.
