Jann Arden … A Work In Progress (Music Documentary)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Main Program: C

Canadian music and media star Jann Arden is so popular, that this nearly hour-long piece called … A Work In Progress was produced in 1999.  It tells you everything you want to know about her music, which is Country and Blues, as well as how appealing she has been to Canadians overall.  This program is not bad, but it hardly delves into who she really is and serves more as a promo about how wonderful and talented she is.

Whether we believe that or not does not matter.  The makers are such fans that they’ll swear by it.  That does not give the audience much chance to really see Arden in a broader context to judge for themselves, which is the ultimate failure of this program, making it redundant and dull.  Duller than Miss Arden supposedly is it seems.  Hope we see something better on her in the future, as inquiring minds want to know.

The 1.33 X 1 image is very soft as shot on old NTSC analog video and boy, does it show.  It is barely above VHS and makes rewatchability an issue.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is barely stereo and has distortion limits throughout.  There are no extras and not even any menus.
