Magnolia
and HDNet have finally begun issuing Blu-ray versions of some of their catalog
titles and Alex Steyermark’s One Last
Thing… (2005) is one of the first of many waves to come from the
company. We happened to previously
review this title on regular DVD and you can read about that at the following
link:

Well,
this new version looks and plays a little better, but it did not change my mind
about a film that could have been better if more of it had been thought out
with the intent of not doing what had already been done.
With that
said, the 1080i digital High Definition image is better than the standard DVD,
but with new improvements come new limits.
When you review anything on DVD, whether it is shot in film or HD, you
never know what was thrown away or is a problem at 480 lines because it is too
little information. With Blu-ray, you
can see limits and by simply not being progressive scan, the image has the
usual detail limits (if not as bad as DVD) you can expect from what we could
now think of as an older production.
Color is a little better there and the image is a little more solid.
As for
sound, we only had the Dolby Digital 5.1 (repeated here) and Dolby 2.0 mixes,
but this Blu-ray adds a DTS 5.1 mix that is better, though it too shows up
flaws and limits from the audio recording of the production. Overall, this is still better than the DVD in
presentation and if you have not seen the film, would be the better way to be
introduced to it. This also has the same
extras.
