The Golden Girls- The Complete Sixth Season

This next
installment of The Golden Girls on
DVD remains as entertaining as all previous seasons, with all of the same
antics as the previous seasons and just as much emotion and heart from this
talented cast of ladies. This 1990-1991
season of The Golden Girls reminds
the audience of why they love the zany cast and their lovable sense of self,
though it is somewhat apparent the cast knew the series was coming to an end as
creative wells ran dry. Though creative
wells may have been running dry this did not mean the series was losing its
always entertaining luster, embodying good acting from a talented cast, an
array of guest stars, and emotional yet humorous storylines.
This
entertaining series centers on the lives of four senior citizen women, who love
life and have just as much fun (if not more) than those half their age. For those who have never viewed the series
please refer to previous reviews of other seasons for an excellent synopsis on
the TV sitcom. This reviewer has his own
views of these women which can be summated in 30 seconds. Dorothy is the apprehensive, strong, yet
loving one. Sophia is Dorothy’s wise yet
quirky mother. Blanche is the flirtatious,
and ummm seemingly town bicycle (everybody gets a ride). And Rose is the dimwitted but sweetest heart
of the group. Overall, they are the rat
pack of the senior community.
This
particular DVD’s features leave something to be desired. The picture quality is less than adequate for
this entertaining series. The color is
not consistent, though most definitely bright enough can often time appear
blurry in its frustrating 1.33:1 Full Screen format. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound quality is
often times inadequate many times displays as being unbalanced and soft. This reviewer knows that better transfers of
picture and sound must exist, so where are they? The extras are also quite sparse only
offering one feature of a “Candid Conversation with Betty, Rue, and others”
courtesy of the museum of Television and Radio.
This reviewer realizes that this is the Sixth Season of The Golden Girls and it becomes difficult to find
entertaining material to feature as extras, but with the possibility of cast
members not being around soon, a plethora of information should be gathered
about the series while the ability still to gain such still exists. Overall, let’s hope Buena Vista Entertainment
puts great care into the 7th and final season of The Golden Girls DVD release for fans
to enjoy forever.
The
Golden Girls was and is a great sitcom that has some rewatchable qualities, but
for those other than true, diehard fans not much. This reviewer found it quite enjoyable to
relive some of the emotional and humorous moments of the series, everything
from Blanche’s daughter having a baby to the girls getting the chicken
pox. The series will stay in the hearts
and minds of fans across the world, but for those other than true fans of the
series this box set would be something to hold off on, at least until studios
fix up picture, sound, and extras.
