The awful
Justin Lin military drama Annapolis
(2006) is now an early Blu-ray release from Disney, despite it being one of the
poorest and most formulaic live action films the studio has produced in a
while. We already suffered through it on
regular DVD, as shown at this link:

James
Franco cannot save the film, Tyrese Gibson is unconvincing as a drill sergeant
and seeing and hearing it more clearly makes that all the more obvious. Not that this looks or sounds so good to
begin with, but it feels like a rough cut that somehow got theatrical
distribution. So how does it perform in
high definition?
The 1080p
1.85 X 1 digital High Definition image is barely more impressive than the
tired, color-gutted, semi-monochrome lameness of the regular DVD, while the PCM
16-bit/48kHz 5.1 mix is better than The Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes here and on the
old DVD, though it does not make the film Black
Hawk Down either.
Extras include a dull audio commentary and deleted scenes
with (thankfully) optional commentary, plus the Blu-ray advancements let you go
to highlights of the film. The word
“highlights” is obviously stretching it a bit in this case. Two featurettes were dumped, but you are no
missing much, sort of like the film itself.
