Why is
the world obsessed with puppets? Does it
go in cycles? Sesame Street, The Muppet
Show, Fraggle Rock, all hit
series for years. Jim Henson was the
king of felt and buttons for years, but it seems that puppets are on the up
rise again. In the past few years such
shows as Crank Yankers, Wonder Showzen, and Greg the Bunny have entertained viewers
with their more off brand and adult sense of humor. This reviewer imagines that growing up with
these lovable puppets has left a void in many peoples’ lives, leaving many
wondering what if these puppets grew up along side of us? Greg
the Bunny was a short lived series on the Fox network being canceled after
only thirteen episodes, a sin that Fox has committed on multiple occasions (Family Guy, Futurama, and Arrested
Development to name a few).
Though Fox
cancels these fun and innovative shows, these series seem to find a new home on
other networks. Greg the Bunny after being canceled in 2002 found its way onto the
IFC (Independent Film Channel), abandoning the old formula the series displayed
on the FOX network and instead revitalizing the series by parodying a plethora
of mostly independent films. This DVD
set entitled Greg the Bunny: Best of the
Film Parodies creates a compilation of the 14 hilarious episodes of film
parodies created by the series. For film
fans and students this series is an excellent take on films that are often
analyzed very seriously, parodying such greats as The Godfather, Natural Born
Killers, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Though, Greg the Bunny’s voice can get quite
annoying after a while the brand of humor and intelligence that flows through
the series leaves audiences laughing for hours.
For a
short, 14 episode DVD set, with a running time of 3 hours and 20 minutes the
content is very impressive. The picture
quality is excellent being shot in High Definition and being presented in this
2 Disc DVD set in 1.78 X 1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The sound is also very impressive being
clean, clear, crisp and not too punchy even with the use of a plethora of voice
actors in its Dolby Digital format. The
extras are all around well presented and plentiful. The special features
amazingly include commentaries on all 14 episodes, Deleted Scenes, a Gag Reel,
2 featurettes, and Photo Galleries, all of which are just as entertaining as
the episodes themselves.
Shout
Factory does an excellent job of meeting the demand of audiences and exceeding
expectations. Shout releases many titles
that most never thought would see the light of day, but continually surprises
audiences with their high levels of quality releases. Greg
the Bunny: Best of the Film Parodies is an excellent set that will surely
entertain all older audiences. Remember
Greg is not the only four letter word used in this television series. Great humor, great quality, great series what
more could anyone want? Everyone should pick up this DVD set and hop into a
twisted world of puppet debauchery.
