Creature Comforts – The Complete Second Season + Merry Christmas Everybody (Claymation)

Picture: B-     Sound: B-     Extras: C/D     Episodes: B-/C

If you have not seen the Aardman Claymation comedy series Creature Comforts, then The Complete Second Season is as good a place to start as the first.  The show takes audio of actual people (in the U.K.) being interviewed and then sets them to various animals Claymated to speak what is being said in the given interview.  This is initially a gimmick that you would think would wear thin, but Aardman is so talented, they parlayed this into a series and made it a hit.

The shorts managed to fit onto one DVD for the entire season, but a second disc also sold separately is Merry Christmas Everybody (2005) that runs 24 minutes and has people getting personal in a different way.  Creator Nick Park and director Richard Golly Goleszowski know what they are doing and if you get into the work, you’ll see how much fun they are having.  Even if this is not your thing, you will find it entertaining to some extent and if you like “reality TV” much, then you should really try this.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot on film and is very clean, on the colorful side and has some good detail throughout.  The Christmas transfer is slightly brighter, but still good.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is well-recorded, has Pro Logic surrounds and only the original audio shows some limits.  The Christmas disc is a bonus on the Second Season set, but also has four featurettes including a making of piece fans will really enjoy.
