Jacob Varmus – All The Things We Still Can Be (Jazz CD)

Sound: B     Music: B

One of the stronger Jazz instrumental albums we have heard lately is Jacob Varmus’ All The Things We Still Can Be (2006) consisting of eight original tracks, one of which (Everything Happens To Me) does have a vocal.  It is not bad, but once Varmus and the three to five musicians who appear throughout get started, it has some real life and energy to it.  Besides the fine performances across the board and Varmus’ production and engineering, there is the quality of the recording.

The PCM 2.0 16bit/44.1kHz Stereo sound is very good, with clarity, some depth and decent detail.  As a matter of fact, the CD format may be holding the performance back a bit, but this is a strong CD sonically.  Varmus has recorded several works and you can find out more about them at www.jacobvarmus.com where additional information about this title is.
