When Deep
Purple was one of its breaks, member Ritchie Blackmore out Rainbow together and
before fellow member Roger Glover joined, were on tour in a big way. Rainbow
– Live in Munich 1977 captures the band on their October 20th
playdate and they give it their all. The
nearly two hours feature only eight songs, but many are very extended jams,
with Still I’m Sad going on for over
27 minutes alone.
Ronnie
James Dio, David Stone and Bob Daisley are also there, but the real driving
force behind the band without a doubt is the late, great drummer Cozy
Powell. He is the core of endurance for
all the extended jamming here, driving away with the best punch this site of
Keith Moon. It reminds us of how great
the Rock genre once was and what has been lost since.
The
concert is pretty intense if you like the material and I must admit I may not
the biggest fan of Mr. Dio, but this is a respectable outing and it is nice to
have it out on DVD.
The 1.33
X 1 image is not bad for its age, but has color and detail limits. The sound is here in Dolby Digital 2.0 and
5.1 mixes, but the DTS 5.1 just a bit of an edge, though the fidelity of the
audio is a little dated and was made when 5.1 as we know it today was not a
consideration. Extras include separate interviews with Hart & Daisley,
stills, three early promotional Music Videos (for Long Live Rock N Roll, Gates
Of Babylon, L.A. Connection), a
slide show with audio commentary and both a color foldout with an essay &
European Tour program reproduction inside the DVD case. Fans will enjoy seeing the band at their
peak. A CD version is also available.
