Mutation (2006)

Picture: C+     Sound: C     Extras: C     Feature: C-

Brad Sykes tries throwing together Horror, Comedy, Martial Arts, bad sex scenes and nothing sticks except the sharp weapons in Mutation, a feature that cannot make up its mind what it wants to be and wastes the whole time trying.  Looking more like a bad home movie unintentionally than anything else, this Re-Animator wanna be even has to make the killer a serial killer.

Yawn.  The acting is bad, fighting badly choreographed and make-up like a bad Halloween party that never should have been scheduled.  Also, we get the new phenomenon of women who think that screaming is acting, something that bad Pop and pseudo-R&B music may have inspired.  I was surprised Sykes tried so much, that none of it worked and that in more ambitious hands, this might have worked.  Instead, it mutates into a bad 85 minutes you’ll easily forget.

The 1.33 X 1 image was shot on video and looks decent in spite of that, but has no memorable shots and the way the martial arts are shot is bad.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is worse, barely stereo and badly recorded.  Extras include an audio commentary and featurette, which are slightly more interesting than the final product.
