Vince
Rocca takes on sex and comedy with his “uncensored” cut of Kisses & Caroms is a casual sex comedy that has aspirations to
be like a Kevin Smith film, but despite some good jokes, sexy women and amusing
situation, never gets it together. After
having a sexual threesome with two very hot women, pool store (the game, i.e.
billiards, not swimming) owner Eddie (Keith Alexander) has to deal with the
fallout. Jen (Nikki Stanzione from The Young & The Restless) and Tara
(Nicole Rayburn from Playboy Magazine)
are the other women and then the frank fun begins.
Well sort
of. The problems with Rocca’s first
feature is bad acting, poor comic timing and worst of all, sloppy
directing. I guess the nudity went to
his head, but the sheer inexperience is obvious throughout, which is a shame
since the premise is amusing. Obviously,
a pool table and billiards place and sex is an obvious cliché, yet not enough
has been done to send it up. Despite the
shortcomings (not a comment on anyone’s physique), there is chemistry here and
some light laughs, making Kisses &
Caroms even more of a missed opportunity than expected.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image looks soft and has detail issues, but is
still more watchable than expected. The
Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is decent in playback, but has no surrounds, though
the recording has more echo than it should in parts and that has nothing to do
with the final mix. Extras are a plenty
if you are interested, including stills, silly short Helium, cast commentary
track, director commentary track, auditions, outtakes, cast audition featurette
making of featurette. Rocca has more
than a few ego trip moments here.
I could
think of worse ways to spend 81 minutes.
I just wish it had worked better.
