Steve Diet Goedde – Living Through…

Still
photography is a great artform as we recently encountered on DVD again with
discs on Henri Cartier-Bresson and William Eggleston (reviewed on this site)
showed. Those discs showed the still
works of the artists, but were more so documentaries about them. Steve
Diet Goedde – Living Through… is more interested in showing the actual
works than the man, spending much of its times showing the often erotic women
(in color and monochrome) set to music.
The disc
is somewhat interactive and pleasant to watch.
Getting the quality in these shots are not easy, but it is done with
some classiness and I liked the Super Jewel Box packaging. As the subtitle notes, the shots were made
between 1990 and 2004, certainly taking more effort than many would think. However, lighting is exceptional and the
works exceed 700 images. This is worth
your time if you like the subject.
The 1.33
X 1 image is not bad, but the lack of anamorphic enhancement does cut into the
resolution, as this is a disc thought of with standard TV playback in
mind. An HD equivalent would be
interesting. The Dolby Digital 2.0
Stereo is simple and music semi-electronic.
It is not bad, but has no surrounds and is not very thick. It does the accompaniment job necessary,
though. Extras include Goedde audio
commentary, behind-the-scenes footage, behind-the-scenes snapshots, interviews
with six of the models and 9 model galleries.
An interesting use of the DVD format for an artform we do not see enough
on DVD.
