If Only (2005 Telefilm)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Telefilm: C

Jennifer Love Hewitt keeps trying to find the next big project and keeps trivializing herself over and over.  Her latest project is the manipulative, flat and boring If Only, a 2005 telefilm where she has a big fight with her fiancée and one of them dies!  Unfortunately, the teleplay was dead on arrival, so anything afterwards is very predictable and yet another safer than safe disaster for Hewitt.

Paul Nicholls is her British beau, so Hewitt’s idea of diversity and a step forward is to get a British guy so he can say the same slop as all her U.S. co-stars did as if no one will notice and/or what is left of her fan base will think she is some kind of genius.  This critic honestly almost fell asleep several times during the viewing, and this was at the peak of the day.  If Only” this all had a script, then I guess it would have attracted someone more interesting than Nicholls.

The 1.33 X 1 full frame image is a little better in color but overly soft and disappointing throughout, though we did not expect much from a recent telefilm anyhow.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix lacks surrounds and is not that warm or rich even in the dialogue area.  Extras include four trailers for other, better programs on Sony DVD.  You’ll find some of them on this site.
