Paul Carr – Just Noodlin’
Sound: B Music:
B-
The saxophonist Paul Carr has released a nine-track Jazz
set called Just Noodlin’ with a title that is supposed to represent more
than just fooling around, but discovering nuances and other new things to add
to one’s work. The tracks are:
1) Just
Noodlin’
2) Blue
& Brown
3) Krush
Groove
4) You’ve
Changed
5) Pat ‘N’
Chat
6) Alfie
7) Dixie
Pig
8) But Not
For Me
9) If I Can
Help Somebody
It is a good, but not great set of performances and mixed
set of tracks. Alfie is done as an extended,
upbeat track with some additional layers of instrumentation, a brisker pace and
sort of negates the meaning of the Bacharach/David classic to the point where
it nearly turns it into a Muzak/elevator piece. The talent is above that, but the piece has issues, which serves
as a metaphor for how the album does not work.
The PCM 2.0 16bit/44.1kHz Stereo is better, with sonics
that are nice and clean, adding to the technical proficiency of the resulting
album. It is good, but does not go as
far as it could have, frustratingly with pretension NOT being a problem.
