Lie With Me (2004/British TV)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: B-

Rosalind Tyler (Eve Best) has awakened to a dead body and the feeling that she has been raped.  Her roommate is the one dead, so she is an automatic suspect, but the D.I. (Andrew Lincoln) wants to make sure.  However, Ros is about to do something very unwise and the tale will just get crazier, but one should always be careful about their actions when they have memory loss in the 2-part 2004 British TV drama Lie With Me.

Though this is a murder mystery, it eventually becomes more of a soap opera and having Best’s character do one too many idiotic things does not help the situation.  When you make the female lead too dumb, it implies that your target female audience be dumb or accept a secondary place in society.  Intended or not, that is what happens, but the program has enough ins and outs, good performances by actors including the underrated Paul McGann.  All in all, it is ambitious and consistent enough to catch, even with some drawbacks.

The 1.33 X 1 image has detail and a little color trouble, but is watchable enough to not get in the way of viewing too much.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has some Pro Logic surrounds, but the sound transfer is overall so weak that regular two-channel might be a better option for many.  There are no extras, but this is three hours, so that gives one plenty to see on this single disc.
