Remember The Titans – Director’s Cut

Before they got it right with films like Glory Road
and Miracle, Disney tried to take over the feel-good sports film market
the way they tried to take over the Hollywood Musical and Remember The
Titans (2000) was an awkward hit into this direction. Trying to be a realistic look at racism and
sports when African American coach Herman Boone took over The Titans high
school football team, the film also wants to be a happy friendly film and is
sloppier than expected in the process.
This new cut does not change that much.
Denzel Washington’s performance as Boone is so good, that it is easy to
be redirected from the mistakes and clashings of direction the film keeps throwing
at the audience, but it is still worth a look.
Will Patton and Donald Faison also star.
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image has faded Video
Black and detail limits looking like the typical commercial Super 35mm
production. As shot by Philippe
Rousselot, A.F.C., it is trying to look like the past with slightly muted
colors as if a picture was browning slightly, but the slight sepia tone is
limited and not that memorable. The
Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is a little better with good dialogue recording and
surrounds, especially when the film gets physical. Trevor Rabin’s score is not bad either. Four deleted scenes and three featurettes about the film and real
life Herman Boone. Sports legend and
now-Republican candidate Lynn Swann hosts the behind the scenes featurette.
