Joel Penner Sextet – The Church Of The Little Black Dog

Another great grouping of Jazz musicians can be heard on
the new CD Joel Penner Sextet – The Church Of The Little Black Dog, and
though I refuse to interpret the exact meaning of the cover and title of the
2005 album release, I can say that it is the music that matters and some very
energy-laden performances of the following can be found as follows:
- You'd
Be So Nice To Come Home To
- Invitation
- Straight
Life
- Laura
- The
Windup
- My Funny
Valentine
- T&G
- Tombo

Many are standards, while some are from films that are not
thought of enough, like A Life Of Her Own (1951) for which Bronislau
Kaper’s Invitation comes from. My
Funny Valentine is grossly overplayed and over-recorded, but the version
here is not as annoying as many. In all
cases, the musicians love the music and the CD is one of the best group efforts
to date in the genre we have come across, so serious Jazz fans should consider this
one required listening.
The PCM 2.0 16bit/44.1kHz Stereo sounds good from the
nicely recorded master. It gives all
the instruments room to be heard and offers a nice soundstage throughout. The foldout has little in the way of vast
information, but you can visit www.joelpenner.com
for more details.
