Gordon Haskell is a Jazz Guitarist ands a survivor who has
been in the business for a long time.
Upon a recent concert taping in Poland from June 28, 2005, he was
especially satisfied with the band he found there and this new DVD of the
concert called The Road To Harry’s Bar is the result. Besides offering many of his own
compositions and exceptional playing of them, a few songs by Michael Franks (Popsicle
Toes) are featured from an album Mr. Franks produced for Haskell. The 18 tracks end with Bill Withers' classic
Ain’t No Sunshine, rounding out a nice long set of very enjoyable, laid
back music. This is one of the nicest
and best DVDs of its kind in the Jazz genre we have encountered to date, so
fans should check into getting this one.
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1/16 X 9 image is a
little soft, but colorful and watchable despite this limit. The sound is here in DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital
5.1 mixes, and while the DTS is a little better than the Dolby, neither are
especially dynamic. The combination is
fine for the genre of music. Extras
include four bonus tracks, bio/discography text information, weblinks, desktop
images and an interview with the artist.
Haskell says this is the beginning of a new era of his career. Hope we see and hear more of it.
