Phoenix – A Tribute To Cannonball Adderley (CD)

Sound: B-     Music: B-

I am not an authority or huge fan of Cannonball Adderley, but the new tribute CD Phoenix is not quite what I expected from the songs I have heard.  The tracks include:

1)     High Fly

2)     Work Song

3)     Jack O’ Woe

4)     Stars Fell On Alabama

5)     Jive Samba

6)     Dis Here

7)     The Sidewalks Of New York

8)     Hamba Nami

9)     Domination

10)  Country Preacher

11)  Medley: Walk Tall/Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

I found the album, a work by Chris Stewart and musician friends, to be somewhat ambitious, but ultimately disappointing.  Instead of inspiring one to run out and hear the originals or appreciate these recordings, I found the works a bit shrill and dull.  It was not memorable and only diehard fans will really enjoy it.

This extends to the actual recording, whose representation on this CD in PCM 2.0 16Bit/44.1kHz Stereo is also a little shrill, harsh and rough considering this is still the Jazz genre.  You can go to www.docstewart.com and find out more for yourself if you are still interested.
