City Of The Dead –
Widescreen Undead Collector’s Edition
Picture: B-

VCI has reissued John Moxey’s City Of The Dead
(1960) in a new Widescreen Undead Collector’s Edition. We were very happy with the original edition
of their restored, uncut version of the film once issued as Horror Hotel. It has been a while since we looked at the
previous version and can say that the picture and sound hold up very well for a
DVD from 2001, especially with all the advances in digital video.
For the most part, this is the same exact DVD repackaged
in a new name to be more attention getting, but this film is so impressive, it
deserves a new push. A forerunner of
Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby (1968), the film stars Venetia Stevenson
as the beautiful young lady who comes to the wrong town and has to deal with
what turns out to be very disturbing happenings. This was one of Christopher Lee’s early triumphs and is as
relevant as ever a film in the Horror genre.
Moxey, who later directed the landmark Night Stalker telefilm
(reviewed elsewhere on this site) with Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak recently
saw a revival that bombed, so be sure to check out a true filmmaking original
at his best.

If you have never seen it, it is required viewing for all
serious film fans.
