As The Musical declined, Paramount did what they could to
create a new cycle of the backstage type that met with some films that received
enough critical and commercial success.
In lieu of a version from Paramount, The Roan Group issued The Perils
Of Pauline back in 1999 and it is still the lone version six years later.
The George Marshall Musical Comedy is very loosely based
on the story of the star of the silent cliffhangers Pearl White (Betty Hutton)
who sings Poppa Don’t Preach To Me!
This is a silly film and has some moments, but it is too busy being
spoofy to really work consistently throughout.
However, those few moments make it worth a look if you arte interested
in the material.
The 1.33 X 1 image was originally issued in 3-strip
Technicolor when they would actually shoot three black and white strips, but
there is no evidence of those vibrant colors here. Instead, the colors are dull and not so good, while there are
detail limits and agedness in the transfer.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is also average and shows its age, especially
being a few generations down. There are
no extras.
