Tru Calling – The Complete Second Season
Picture: C+
Sound: B- Extras: C- Episodes: C
Not being able to sustain itself or its plot, Tru
Calling came to an abrupt end before it could really get rolling and part
of the problem is simply doing the same “can see dead people” formula that has
been done to death. Eliza Dushku is
actually not the problem, becoming better as the show rolled along. The Complete Second Season is about
as complete as it is going to get, offering only six more episodes, the last
one of which was never broadcast.
Because the stakes are higher, the show has to buckle down
and get more serious and focused, but it unfortunately has only a limited
enough set of factors and ideas to pull on.
Fans and those who become involved form the first season should be
satisfied, because after watching these shows, what else could they have
done? The show has some moments, but if
it had come up with more interesting ideas earlier, it would still be with
us. At least Fox saw it through far
enough to find closure.
The anamorphically enhanced 16 X 9/1.78 X 1 image is not
bad for a TV production that uses slick editing and digital here and there, but
it looks softer than the last set and maybe some switch to digital HD versus
film occurred. Color is not as
consistent, but the copies are clean, yet the lack of sharpness ruins that a
bit. The sound is once again acceptably
good Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with Pro Logic surrounds well utilized. The combination is sufficient, but should
have improved from the previous set.
The only extra is a short featurette designed to launch this next
season, but it was its final one instead.
Look for Dushku next in the True Lies sequel, which looks like it
is finally underway.
