Bigger than the
Sky

Bigger
than the Sky falls into the ‘little too sweet to be good’ category for
my taste and the film does have some redeeming qualities, but overall will
leave most people a bit on the uneasy side of things. It’s another indie film that has some promise and has a fairly
original script, but despite all that, it fails to impress on almost every
other level.
The plot is neither complex nor simple, but rather right
in the middle. Our main character is
dumped by his girlfriend, which sets him on a path of irrationality, leading
him to audition for the lead role in Cyrano de Bergerac, which he lands, upon
which his luck gets even worse and more bad things happen to him. The film stars John Corbett (most known for
his role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding),
Amy Smart (who I really enjoyed here), Sean Astin, and a few other upcoming
stars or fairly known actors.
This is about as basic as a DVD gets as well. 1.85 X 1 anamorphic transfer that looks
fairly good with some muted colors, soft detail, dark scenes are noticeably
bad, there is an abundance of grain throughout and overall this does not really
give off a good impression for a film that is newer, but some of those
technical problems could be due to it being an independent production, which
probably could not afford the best of the best, especially when it came to the
transfer or even the cameras, lenses, film stock, etc. I doubt that this is a problem with MGM’s
transfer. Even the Dolby 5.1 mix sounds
a bit exaggerated and almost too much.
I would guess that the film was more stereo in nature and has been
forced into a surround feel just to do it.
There is very little happening surround wise anyway, but oh well.
No extras either making this a hard one to sell and with
everything else being so standard it is doubtful that this one will remain
memorable in anyone’s brain.
