Hercules – Season Six: The Final Season
Picture: C+

Kevin Sorbo put Hercules on the map, but by the
sixth and last season, he looked bored and the show had played itself out quite
a bit. The Xena spin-off (reviewed
elsewhere on this site) may have done more harm than good, Disney had done
their animated hit feature film and Sorbo went down as the most successful live
action actor in the role since Steve Reeves.
It also typecast him in the role, no matter what other films or TV
series he did.
The show itself became the biggest hit in syndication at
its peak, but Universal Television quit while they were ahead and many
imitators came and went quickly. The
shows in this final set are as follows, with commentary tracks marked with an
*:
1) Be
Deviled*
2) Love,
Amazon Style*
3) Rebel
With A Cause
4) Darkness
Visible
5) Hercules,
Tramps & Thieves* (best episode title in the series?)
6) City Of
The Dead
7) A Wicked
Good Time*
8) Full
Circle*
The point of the show was to have fun with the mythology
and not take itself too seriously, but that also made the show wear thin
quickly. At this point, this could only
be a series for diehard fans and that is really who it is made for. If you are not a fan, this will drag on
quickly.
The 1.33 X 1 full frame image has some digititis and even
slight blocking throughout, but we’ve seen worse and it is not like this was
the best looking show on TV. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 Stereo has Pro Logic surrounds and is the highlight of the
set. The music is just more of the
same. Extras include a photo gallery on
DVD 1, It’s A Wrap wrap party footage on DVD 3, special effects
featurette, behind the scenes of the final show and titles for the series (some
never used) on DVD 4 and a DVD-ROM in DVD 5 with mythology, series trivia,
Hercules Chronicles and actor, director and writer bios. That makes this a well-rounded conclusive
box. Now, the entire show is out on DVD
and that ends that.
