Boney M – Special
Edition EP (DTS)
Picture: C+
Sound: B Extras: C+ Videos: B
In another attention-getting name, we have a Disco-era
vocal group from Germany called Boney M. That happens to be the title of this DVD EP from a long series of
releases by Classic Pictures of usually well-known acts, but this was something
different. Yes, there are only four
videos here, but they all have to be seen to be believed. The vocal group consists of three ladies
(some from Jamaica) and one man, who does the vast majority of the
dancing. His “moves” are fascinating
and like no dancing you have ever seen before.
You will never forget it, or be able to keep a straight face watching
it.
The songs are:
Daddy Cool (1976)
Sunny (a 1976 remake of the Bobby Hebb’s 1966 hit)
Rasputin (1978)
Children Of Paradise (1980)
These were all taped in club-like settings and the crowds
various reactions just keep adding to the fun.
You can watch this over and over again, and get new details all the
time, often for all the wrong reasons.
The whole EP series is in print and this is one of its highlights,
especially well produced and remastered for this DVD.
The 1.33 X 1 image is PAL all the way, looking good for
its age and has good color reproduction for the time taped. The sound is here in two 5.1 mixes, Dolby
and even better DTS. Sure, these are
not exactly the epitome of multi-channel sound, but it is some really good
ambiance reworking. Extras include a
“pop up DVD” section that gives you facts about the vocal group in a ribbon at
the bottom of the screen as the songs play.
You also get 13 minutes of previews for the few dozen other EP DVDs in
the series, also with the 5.1 options.
Additionally, there is a nearly 38-minutes-long 10-track
jukebox segment that promotes ten full-length Classic DVD music releases that
you might want to sample. That all may
seem very commercial, but this is an opportunity to be exposed to some
interesting music you might not hear otherwise. One thing is for certain; you will never forget Boney M.
