Burn-Up Scramble – Chicks Combat Crooks (Animé/Volume Three)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: B-

A team of elite fighting women secretly battle crime on assignments they are given.  That would sound like Charlie’s Angels, but this is Burn-Up Scramble, an Animé TV series recently produced to likely take advantage of the appeal of the films and arrival of the series on DVD.  It is somewhat more original than that and its complains about globalization, being forced to work for free, and battling hidden forces really sticks it to the clueless Charlie’s Angels – Full Throttle.  That feature film sequel was an amazing disaster, as the fun first film trips up on playing it safe and somehow forgot every single thing that made the first film work.

We pick up with Chicks Combat Crooks, the third volume of the DVD releases, featuring the following half-hour shows:

          9) The Black Seajack!  Crash Over The Ocean!

10) Destruction Of Great Tokyo!?  Farewell Warriors!

11) Last Match – Warriors Super Battle!

12) Go Warriors! To Infinity & Beyond!

This works far better than Burn Up Excess, ADV’s Animé Charlie’s Angels wanna be reviewed elsewhere on this site.  The voices sound the same and the clichéd Animé temper tantrums are tired quickly, but at least the show is free to do something besides recycling and repeating itself.  Excess was more co0ncerned about titillation, while Full Throttle was a betrayal of a good legacy for which I cannot imagine a comeback.  The only problem here is that the female team is generically dubbed The Warriors, which is lame.  Otherwise, this and any of the previous volumes are worth a look.

The full frame 1.33 X 1 image is nice and clean, but has definition limits, yet has good color.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has no real Pro Logic surrounds.  The combination seems a bit older than the current production suggests.  The few extras include art gallery, previews for three other Geneon Animé titles, commercial collection and voice actors interview.  That is hardly better than the usually limited extras on these Animé titles, but you could do much worse.
