Debt-Doomed is the new volume of The
Daichis – Earth’s Defense Family that Geneon is issuing via Bandai Visual
to try and capitalize further on Pixar’s The Incredibles. When the initial volume debuted, the film
was a big hit in theaters, but this second volume unexpectedly comes out around
the same time the Pixar hit heads to DVD.
For such a big hit, it is amazing it came out as soon as it did, but
Geneon wants to capitalize. Though
still a good-looking, well-produced Animé show, this has become even sillier in
the new batch of shows.
My opinion on the show has not improved at all and it is
running out of ways to move forward, but the second batch of shows are:
6) Warrior’s Rest
7) The Guy In The Rain
8) The Cute Invaders
9) The Day Love Destroys
Earth
All one can repeat over and over is that it is for ages
beginning at 13. The jokes are not that
good and pale to similar ground in The Incredibles, which tends to be
more knowing and have more ironic distance.
It is also more mature without pandering to a younger age group,
something many Animé shows out to look into.
The 1.33 X 1 full frame image is still one of the clearest
we have seen on an Animé series to date, offering better color than usual and
does not fake the out-of-focus look or softness that has become a cliché of the
genre. That makes it worth a look on
that level, though it is nothing groundbreaking. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo still has Pro Logic surrounds in
both its English and Japanese versions, so the sound is not bad and makes sense
for a recent production. The only
extras are text-free end credits, previews for this and three other Geneon DVD
titles. Not much again, but what could
anyone expect after a show like this?
At least it is consistent as a gimmick.
