Requiem From The Darkness 3 – Pain Of The Damned

(Animé TV)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Episodes: C+

We had never received the earlier volumes of Requiem From The Darkness, but we doubt starting at the beginning would have made much of a difference.  Once again, though the titles and style try to scream Horror genre and something serious, this still violent (16 and up) show is as much a comedy as anything.  The episodes are:

8) Field Gun

9) The Unkillable

10) Flames Of Desire

The only desire here is to do the same jokes and other silliness that keeps this a more typical formula Animé than something more interesting or groundbreaking.  This is why, despite the popularity of this form of animation, it is too often overrated and that is why the U.S. media rarely bothers with it.  Here, Momosuke finds his brother missing upon a surprise visit.  This leads to a killer on the loose from the previous shows, so this should be more of an action piece, right?  No.  Instead, these shows add up to 75 minutes of everything we have seen before.

The art is not bad, presented here in a 1.33 X 1 aspect ratio, colorful and often without the artificial white glow too many of these shows add for no good reason.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 in either English or Japanese has Pro Logic surround and is the highlight of the title by default.  Extras are few, including two brief art sections and previews for three other Geneon titles.  If you must see Requiem From The Darkness, start at the beginning, even if it matters little.
