Robert Dubac’s Inside
The Male Intellect (Stand-up
Comedy)

Stand up comedy continues to be a popular kind of DVD
title, and the nice thing about Robert Dubac’s Inside The Male Intellect
is that it does not try too hard. Dubac
is definitely interested in a female audience and playing good-looking dumb boy
when it comes to relationships, even as he offers all kinds of insight and
provocation of his audience, especially female. He also does this as various characters to push the limits of
various male ego limits. The comedy is
not immediately a laugh riot, but is consistent and clever throughout.
Dubac writes all the routines, and on stage, adds the
device (prerecorded or not) of a female voice offering counterpoint
throughout. The only problem I had
throughout involves assumptions of male/female interaction that are not always
true at any one time. The act does not
become a one-joke affair, but it is a hit-and-miss one. It also assumes what a female audience is,
which also has its limits, while the title mocks the kind of men who are a bit
dysfunctional. Not quite the battle of
the sexes, Inside The Male Intellect is worth a look and listen.
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot on
tape and has the usual limits, but it is fine for this kind of program in front
of a live audience. The Dolby Digital
5.1 mix is an interesting choice for a show that offers constant jokes, but it
does guarantee clarity and a better idea of audience reaction. Extras include a few more bonus segments of
Bob in action, but that is it. By the
way, some copies include a 15-minute phone card for those who might want to
call a loved one. This is amusing all
the way.
