Some one
recently asked me why if a series is coming out on DVD season by season, why
release single DVDs of material. The
boxes are not so much more, I was told, and it seems to be overdoing it. Well, I countered that some people do not
have the money for even boxed sets and may only want a few shows on a single
DVD, especially children who have limited money. The latest SpongeBob Squarepants single release is humorously
titles Home Sweet Pineapple and offers eight more shows. They include:
Home Sweet Pineapple
Band Geeks
Sandy, SpongeBob & The Worm
Ripped Pants
Sandy’s Rocket
Culture Shock
MuscleBob BuffPants
Employee Of The Month
They are
filled with the same fun humor the shows are known for, especially in their use
of distorting reality by virtue of the animated form for laughs, giving this
qualities above the usual “animated radio” fare too many animated series still
offer. The recent feature film release
did not do badly and was one of Paramount Pictures better performers this year,
so children will still want these singles, while fans might not want to wait
for later season episodes to surface in boxed sets. Like SpongeGuard On Duty (reviewed elsewhere on this
site), Home Sweet Pineapple is another nicely tied-together set of shows
everyone can enjoy.
Once
again, the full frame image on the DVD for each short looks good, but there are
some small flaws that give away the late NTSC analog source for this disc in
micro-shimmering and slight softness throughout. Occasional live-action footage is not better. This is not animation with extreme detail,
so these flaws are diminished. The
Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo does not have any palpable Pro Logic surrounds, but is
definitely a recent recording. The
extras this time include trailers to several other Paramount and Nickelodeon
film, DVD and TV releases, a screensaver for PCs and biography excerpts from
the new book SpongeBob Exposed! The Insider’s Guide To SpongeBob Squarepants. I’ll have to see the book.
