M.
Night Shyamalan's Trap
4K
(2024) stars Josh Hartnett and centers on a demented serial killer
who poses as a normal everyday dad who is taking his daughter to her
favorite pop singer's concert. He soon discovers that the stadium
the concert is being held at is surrounded by police who are on a
manhunt to find him in the crowd. With every exit being sealed off
by police, the killer has to come up with inventive distractions and
clever ways to deceive authority and remain anonymous. Hartnett's
character in this flick is as deceptive as they come as he constantly
stays one step ahead of the Police despite their numbers and
reinforcements.
Shyamalan
is a very clever writer and this film is no exception. The film does
a great job of raising the stakes throughout and really delivers on a
final act that's full of twists and turns at every corner. Just when
you think he's about to get caught something else wild happens with
the shifts in power changing hands in creative ways. While some
things that occur in the film are a bit far fetched, Trap
delivers on an original and interesting concept that makes it worth
checking out.
Trap
also stars Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Alison Pill, and veteran
Hollywood actress Hayley Mills. The performances in the film are all
really solid particularly with Josh Hartnett who does a great job of
crafting a character whose personality shifts depending on the
situation much like James McAvoy's character in Split.
Saleka Shyamalan does a great job in her breakthrough role here as
well and also performed all of the original songs and choreography in
the film, which fleshes out her pop star character.
The
film is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc with Dolby Vision/HDR (10;
Ultra HD Premium)-enhanced
Ultra High Definition image,
an HEVC / H.265 (88+ Mbps) codec, a widescreen aspect ratio of
2.40:1, and lossless audio in Dolby
Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mixdown for older systems @ 48kHz,
24-bit). The film looks and sounds great on disc with top notch
sound and picture that certainly bests any other format on the
market. Even the darker moments of the film are clearly defined and
the sound mix is clear and consistent.

M.
Night Shyamalan is an interesting writer and filmmaker that continues
to come up with engaging stories and is able to pull fantastic
performances out of his actors. While Trap
may not be as sharp as some of his brightest stars, it's certainly a
well made and engaging thriller that never turns out quite the way
you expect it to.
