Black Adam 4K (2022/DC Comics/Warner 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray w/Blu-ray)

4K Ultra HD Picture: A- Picture: B+ Sound: A- Extras: B Film: C

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson stars as the DC Comics anti-hero, Black Adam (2022), in a film made right at the brink of the DC Comics / Warner / Discovery merger and the switching hands of the company. While the future relevance of the film is in question at the time of this writing, the average superhero film mimics the style of Michael Bay and Zack Snyder and doesn't quite feel entirely cohesive as the film jumps from one expensive set piece to another. Jean Collet-Serra also directed Johnson in Disney's Jungle Cruise, another VFX heavy film that felt a bit heavy handed.

Black Adam introduces many DC Comics characters that haven't been in films before including Justice Society members Dr. Fate, Hawkman, Isis, Atom Smasher, Cyclone, and others but with a budget pushing 300 Million (with promotion), the film failed to become the Hollywood tentpole franchise it so desperately wanted to be. The film also stars Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, and Sarah Shahi.

5,000 years after being gifted the power of ancient Egyptian gods, Black Adam is unearthed onto modern society, which isn't prepared for a man of his talents. Once Adam starts to run amok on the modern world, The Justice Society takes action in an attempt to contain him, but other matters are at stake.

The film, whose title character began at Fawcett Comics like Shazam! did, does fit into the same DCU universe as the James Gunn-directed Suicide Squad film and Peacemaker as we see several characters played by the same cast members such as Amanda Waller and Jennifer Holland (real life wife of new DCU president James Gunn), and so (as of this writing) it is unclear how they will factor into the rebooted structure the studio is planning. Henry Cavill's Superman makes a post credit appearance for a teaser aimed at promoting an onscreen battle between Black Adam and Superman, but that is reportedly now not happening.

Black Adam looks fine on 4K UHD disc and is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc with HDR10, an HEVC / H.265 codec, a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and an audio track in an English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless mix. A 1080p Blu-ray version of the film is also included, and looks and sounds fine, but can't keep up with the excellent transfer in 4K obviously.

Special Features include:

The History of Black Adam

Who is The Justice Society?

From Soul to Screen

Black Adam: A Flawed Hero

Black Adam: New Tech in an Old World

Black Adam: Taking Flight

Kahndaq: Designing a Nation

The Rock of Eternity

Costumes make the Hero

and Black Adam: A new type of action

Black Adam feels like it came out a few years too late, though our editor wished it never came out at all. As he has stated, it is not only the worst DC Comics movie ever made (yes, worse than Superman III or Superman IV and makes Halle Berry's Catwoman look like 'The Irene Cara Story',) but is also worse than the worse Marvel Comics films (the X-Men prequels and sequels, Punisher: War Zone, the unreleased Fantastic Four fiasco and Howard the Duck (1986)) and is the worst impersonation of a Zack Snyder film ever. Now you can see for yourself, but make sure you are not sleepy when viewing.
