Now
for the continuing adventures of some comedy favorites and a feature
film that is becoming a cult classic....
We
start with the sequel Boss
Baby: Family Business 4K
(2021) and it is the first sequel (of many more?) to the hit original

Looking
at the sequel
in the same format, it is more of the same and that may appeal to
children, but all I saw were some missed opportunities and a female
baby has arrived to be a disrupter. Any gangster references are
beyond played out (didn't this studio already do such a film with
sharks?) and though the money is there and the work is there and the
voice actors do a fine job, this is all they could come up with?
This
runs about 110 minutes, but is far too safe and predictable, plus, a
new unrelated cliche. Why do some of these CGI features suddenly
have a character show up in a room with HDTVs all over the walls and
a remote to control all kinds of said technology? Then the idea of a
plot to 'turn babies into brats' has so many issues and if you think
about it, has a borderline issue with real life child abuse that
could only be addressed in a separate essay that this is just one big
disappointment overall.

very young John Cusack headlines One
Crazy Summer
(1986), which is finally making its way onto Blu-ray after all these
years. For many, this is one of the quintessential comedies of the
1980s and for those a fan of Cusack's early work including the
infamous Better
Off Dead,
which this is a pseudo continuation of (but not really.) Most
notable in the film is breakout star Demi Moore, who looks as
beautiful and young as ever here, and other fun recognizable faces
such as Bobcat Goldthwait, Joel Murray, and the infamous Curtis
(Booger from Revenge
Of The Nerds,
TV's Moonlighting)
Armstrong. This Warner Archive disc is sure to go quick as this
movie simply has never looked this good on disc before.
A
young cartoonist (Cusack) is trying his best to get into the Rhode
Island School of Design, but ends up in several crazy adventures one
crazy summer before departing to adulthood. He ends up rescuing a
rocker chick in distress from a gang of bullies, hangs out with his
several wild friends that end up in all kinds of mischief, and learns
a thing or two.

The
U.S. version of the show takes place in Chicago and features many
characters each struggling with normal people problems, and usually
on the losing end. The show goes to great lengths to be topical and
features gay and straight relationships and modern situations such as
this season taking place during the COVID pandemic. It can never
settle on whether it's a drama or a comedy and feels a little
disjointed to me personally at times. Many of the characters are
pretty hateful and I find many of them hard to relate to.
This
season also features Jeremy Allen White, Ethan Cutkosky, Noel Fisher,
Kate Miner, Christian Isaiah, Steve Howey, and others.

By
now, it is still a hit and fine for fans still following it, but for
me, I think the series is starting to have some fatigue in it, no new
surprises and is playing it safe. These 18 episodes will be the ones
remembered for Sheldon entering college well in advance of most
people, but the writers definitely give the supporting characters
their storylines and character development (at least enough for a
sitcom) and that is fine, but it is also a bit predictable now and
versus those first two seasons, the show has fallen into formula and
the weekly TV grid, all while fitting into anything the previous show
established about its title character.
Maybe
they'll come up with more in the remaining season they can come up
with before they all become too old to be the story before the first
season of the original series starts, but its still one of the CBS
Network's few good shows, so we'll see.
The
only extra is a behind the scenes featurette: Cooped
Up With The Coopers.
Now
for playback performance. The 2160p HECV/H.265, 2.35 X 1, Dolby
Vision/HDR (10; Ultra HD Premium)-enhanced Ultra High Definition
image on the 4K Baby
disc is easily going to be the best presentation here when the other
entries are two sitcoms shot HD in standard ways and you get an older
film shot on 35mm from 35+ years ago, as good as it looks. Color
here is nice, but definition, depth and detail are nothing
extraordinary versus the best CGI features. They also stay in the
visual mode of the first film. Safe, but it looks good enough. The
regular 1080p Blu-ray version definitely cannot compete in the color
department and is a little clearer and more naturalistic (as it were)
on the 4K version. Both
discs sport a decent, if not knock-out, lossless Dolby Atmos 11.1 mix
(Dolby TrueHD 7.1 for older systems) that kicks in when it has to,
but sonic demos are few and far between.
One
Crazy Summer
is presented in 1080p high definition with an MPEG-4 AVC codec and a
widescreen original aspect ratio of 1.85 X 1 and paired with an
English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo lossless mix, both of
which are of a high standard for the format and look fine here.
The
1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image transfer on the Sheldon
episodes are just fine for the style chosen, but it is purposely not
as colorful as its predecessor series (not to be taken as a statement
that the past world here is somehow drab or drabber than the present)
and is fine and professionally done. It just is nothing too
memorable. The
DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless mixes on all the episodes are
also well recorded and mixed, but this is a dialogue-based comedy, so
the sonics are not going to be a knockout either and are quieter that
its predecessor show. The combination is in line with the previous
sets and just fine for what they are.
Finally,
this Shameless
set is presented in standard definition with an anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 X 1 widescreen aspect ratio and a 5.1 Dolby Digital
mix, all of which are of the high standard for the DVD format. The
show is pretty raunchy and presented uncut and commercial free on
Showtime. I'm sure this presentation is comparable to the original
broadcast for standard definition.
