Constantine:

Much
like the Joss Whedon produced series Firefly,
DC Entertainment's Constantine
has become another short lived genre show that fans have been dying
for more of. Exactly how the show 'failed' is beyond me as the star
Matt Ryan (Layer
Cake)
nails the character and has continued the role in DC's Arrow
and the recent Justice
League Dark
animated movie (both reviewed elsewhere on this site), and the talent
behind the lens is no joke with Neil Marshall (The
Descent),
Mary Harron (American
Psycho),
and big time Hollywood screenwriter David S. Goyer (The
Dark Knight Trilogy)
amongst others being responsible for the creative. If you're a fan
of the Keanu Reeves film, which I thought was underrated, or just a
fan of DC Comics Television in general, then you should definitely
hunt down a copy of this great Blu-ray set.
Wise-cracking
but brilliant John Constantine (Ryan), a demon hunter and dabbling
master of the occult, must struggle with his past sins while
protecting the innocent from the converging supernatural threats that
constantly break through to our world due to the "Rising
Darkness". Balancing his actions upon the line of good and
evil, Constantine uses his skills and a supernatural scry map to
journey across the nation to send these terrors back to their own
world, all for the hope of redeeming his soul from eternal torment.
Thirteen
episodes span three discs and include Non
est asylum, The Darkness Beneath, The Devil's Vinyl, Feast of
Friends, Danse Vaudou, The Rage of Caliban, Blessed Are the Damned,
The Saint of Last Resorts: Part One, The Saint of Last Resorts: Part
Two, Quid Pro Quo, A Whole World Out There, Angels and Ministers of
Grace,
and the series finale Waiting
for the Man.
The
presentation here is fantastic and better than the other television
broadcast by miles. No annoying watermarks or commercials are here
in this 1080p high definition transfer with a 1.77:1 widescreen
aspect ratio and a fantastic sounding DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1
lossless track. The show is very dark and cinematic, so to see it
presented on Blu-ray this nicely is a treat.
No
digital copy included.
Special
Features include a Trailer, Constantine:
On The Set,
2014 Comicon Panel with Q&A by Cast and Creators and DC Comics
Night at Comic 2014.
I'm
a huge fan of this show and I hope that it goes revived again someday
down the line. Matt Ryan is a great Constantine and looks a bit
closer to what the character was realized in the comics. Not as
cartoonish as the CW's The
Flash
and Arrow,
NBC was wrong in cutting the cord on Constantine
- at least in this reviewer's opinion.
