Similar
in tone to last year's Knight
of Cups
and filmed back to back, acclaimed Director Terence Malick returns
with another thought-provoking and gorgeously photographed film, Song
To Song
(2017). Not short on star power, the film features Ryan Gosling,
Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer, and
Natalie Portman and takes place in Austin, Texas (as opposed to the
L.A. setting Malick used in Cups).
This story of love and betrayal also deals with the dark and light
sides of the music industry that many artists will be able to relate
to.
Those
expecting a musical or a film reliant on its music to tell a story
won't get quite what they bargained for here, where as the main focus
here being more on the characters and their challenged love lives
behind the curtain. Songwriters Fay (Mara) and BV (Gosling) attract
crowds but have a love that flounders... at one point hot and heavy
and in others a bit distant. While on the opposite end of the token,
you have a rich music mogul (Fassbender) who has a gorgeous waitress
(Portman) on his arm, but even her beauty doesn't hold his attention
for long. How these couples intertwine is a complex, yet realistic,
look at the struggles of a career in a competitive industry and how
life is behind the vail of fame.
Presented
on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with a stunning 2160p transfer with HDR
(high dynamic range 10-bit color) and a widescreen aspect ratio of
2.39:1, the film looks incredible on the format and close to watch
Malick intended when he and Oscar winning cinematographer Emmanuel
Lubezki (The
Revenant)
shot the film. Also included is a lesser 1080p Blu-ray disc with the
same widescreen ratio and a fine transfer for the format but lacking
the detail of 4K.
Both
discs feature the same audio tracks in an English DTS-HD MA (Master
Audio) lossless 5.1 track that bring the film to life adequately and
has a very realistic feel. There aren't any explosions or grand
levels of sound design in the film, so this mix suits the film just
fine. The songs used are very interesting and are highlighted in the
supplemental content.
Also
included is a digital UV copy of the film.
